This painting was created at the request of the Center for Disease Control for the December 2017 cover of their journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, to depict zoonoses. The motif of circles is used to connect humans and animals, since circles have no beginning and no end, much like the interdependence of humans and animals. At the center is the germ of life, and the concentric circles show domesticated animals, bats and birds interspersed with human stick figures engaged in agrarian activities. Surrounding the outermost circle are small human figures drawn in the Warli Indian tribal style of art, linked hand in hand, keeping vigil, because we hold the key to curing and preventing the spread of zoonotic infections.
